DAY FOUR

Day 4 (11/17/04)

Today I was going to accompany Karen to the convention center.  The only problem is that I don't have a pass so I'll just have to explore around while she does her thing.  We are now experts at using the bus system of Glasgow (as long as we take the 66 bus that goes from our hotel to the cite center).  So we boarded the 66 and headed to town.  This time we purchased an all day unlimited travel pass for £1 20 pence ($2.40). This allowed us to get on and off any bus.  Once downtown, I had the idea to walk along the river and catch any bus heading toward the convention center.  Unfortunately, there are no busses that go that way so we ended up walking about 2 miles to the convention center.

This would not have been bad except for the crappy weather here in Scotland.  First it rained, then the wind started to gust to what I estimated to be 40 miles per hour.  My poor umbrella was turned inside-out about 10 times.  Karen was wearing a hooded rain coat but I was wearing a leather jacket (but then again, she's smarter than I am).

And you wonder why we didn't rent a car.  The roads here are crazy!

We finally made it and on time.  She went to the conference and I went exploring.

This is the convention center.  They call it the Armadillo.  Wonder Why...

First stop was the Glasgow Science center.  This stop was not free and it turned out to be well suited for the average grade schooler.  Lots of hands on stuff that would be really interesting if you were 12 years old.

Luckily, they did have a room with Apple computers and high speed Internet connections.  I spend 2 hours here getting my Internet fix for the day and I also update their computers with several plug-ins that were missing (no charge my the service).

Hey, here's a picture of the Swartz.WS web site on one of their computers.  (By the way, I made Swartz.WS the default web site location on all the computers.  I also downloaded a small software program I wrote that automatically makes Swartz.WS the default location.   I don't think they'll mind...)

The picture above is a helicopter that almost crashed on me!  The thing was just taking off when it was caught by a strong gust of wind and started sliding to the left and down right towards me!  What a way to go... hamburger in Glasgow...  Frozen for a moment, I then took this picture as it headed up and away.  I thought it might help with the law suit.

A mile or so away is the great ship.  The place was closed so I just took a picture.

This is Bells Bridge.  A walking bridge across the River Clyde.

Here's a shot of Karen in front of the poster session.  Of course I did not take this picture because I was not allowed in.
