THE BAHAMAS ADVENTURE

12/19/00 (Tuesday)

I am writing this while underway back to Treasure Cay.  We woke up this morning and left March Harbor heading towards Elbow Cay and the small town of Hope Town.

Hope Town lighthouse at Elbow CayWe arrive at about 11AM after finding our way in through the narrow channel.  Grabbing a mooring we decide to head into town, dingy again, of course.  I photographed the light house but elect not to take my camera to town due to the effort of the transport routine ( plastic bags and such ).  This was a mistake.  Hope Town was filled with photographic scenes.

We walked both the upper and lower streets of the town.  Passed the little fire station ( the size of a small garage ). Passed old historic houses, bleached white and paint peeled where people still live.  We ate lunch overlooking the crashing surf at a little restaurant that took 45 minutes to finally bring our lunch. ( Island time strikes again! )

This wait was important because we knew a cold front was coming in and with it rain and winds.  By the way a cold front means a drop from 75 degrees to 70.  The people here put on sweaters when it drops below 75.

We dingyed back to the Seaclusion and headed out trying to beat theRon at the helm and Diane showing GPS weather back to Treasure Cay.  We ran the engine and put up the mainsail but the weather caught us.  The wind pushed us over 30+ degrees on our side and the gusts were getting dangerous.  We dropped the sail and resigned ourselves to motoring only.

Arriving back at Treasure Cay just before dark, we tied off at our slip good old L31.  The wind howled and the temperature dropped to 60.  We ate dinner onboard.  I bet Diane and Ron in a couple of games of Crazy Eights.  When we could take no more, about 10PM, we turned in for the night.
